Classic Jeep Trucks


Even Jeep isn't sure how its name came to be -- it's not even close to Willys-Overland, the original name of the company. Some think the term resulted from the slurring of the letters GP, the U.S. Army's abbreviation for General Purpose, referring to the Willys Quad that became the Army's standard vehicle. Others believe it was a nickname taken from Eugene the Jeep, a popular character from the Popeye cartoon strip.
No matter how and where it originated, the name Jeep stuck. Willys trademarked it after World War II ended, and moved forward to build civilian off-road utility vehicles.

This gallery focuses on civilian Jeep trucks, beginning with mid-1940s era models. Truck production ended years ago (with the Jeep Comanche in 1992), but recent Jeep concepts (the Gladiator and the JT) have made Jeep enthusiasts hopeful that the automaker is finally ready to build a new pickup.

Hispano 1924


When Hispano-Suiza was formed in 1904, they soon found success producing trucks to meet a need in Spain, a poor country at the time with mountains and inefficient railways. They did produce cars as well, which soon built a strong reputation for their reliability and performance. Most were sold to European heads of state which established the brand in luxury circles. Their reputation continued to grow as they enjoyed success in racing.

In 1919, at the Paris Motor Show, Hispano-Suiza introduced the H6 powered by a 6.6-liter overhead cam aluminum six-cylinder engine offering 135 horsepower and a top speed of 85 mph. One of the more advanced features found on the H6 were the power-assisted brakes, the first in the industry, driven with a special shaft from the transmission. Upon deceleration, the cars momentum drove the brake servo to provide additional power. There were around 2,350 examples of the H6 produced through 1933.

In 1922, Hispano-Suiza introduced the more powerful H6B. This example features a Coupe deVille body built by the legendary coachbuilder Saoutchik, and includes many fine French accessories.

Panhard 1907


The first automobile manufacturer in France was Panhard-Levassor and is only second in the world to Daimler-Benz. These two companies worked together sharing ideas and designs and Daimler actually supplied Panhard with engines during their first years of production.

Panhard-Levassor was an established woodworking and machinist firm. They constructed their first prototype automobile in 1890, and production vehicles in 1891. By 1900, the firm had over 850 employees and were building 75 cars per month. Even at this capacity, they were unable to keep up with demand. One of their earliest customers was the Honorable C.S. Rolls who, a few years later, would build his own car, the Rolls-Royce.

Along with being an early producer of automobiles, they were also leaders in technological advancements with one of the first driveshafts instead of chain-drive and the first to use a pressed-steel chassis frame. They used racing to promote their produce and captured many significant wins in many early races, including the Paris-Bordeaux Race.

The work performed by the French firm of Panhard et Levassor aided in the technical evolution of the automobile. The work that they did and the innovations that they produced helped acceleration the popularity of the automobile.

Soekarno Mercedes-Benz 600 limousine


President Soekarno is known to have a Mercedes-Benz 600 limousine between different brands of cars his official. However, during his rule (1945-1967), no photographs or news in the media that shows or states that the President never used the car.

The only one who tells the story that President Soekarno used Mercedes-Benz 600 obtained from the writings of drg. Oei Hong Kian, who was President Soekarno dental care for several months, before and after his rule ended.

In his article published in Essence magazine in October 1988, Oei Hong Kian tells drg, beginning September 1967, at exactly 9:00 pm, Sukarno, whose rule ended in early March 1967, came to her home for medical treatment using the Mercedes-Benz 600, accompanied by five jeep full of soldiers, who guard it closely.

Ethanol and Classic Cars


The next time you take your classic out for a cruise night or car show, do an impromptu poll with those in attendance and see how many folks feel that the ethanol now used in modern fuels is detrimental for their older vehicles. We wouldn't be surprised if the majority said yes and had a story about how they thought ethanol was the culprit in a mechanical malady.
Insurance companies specializing in classic car policies may even contain an ethanol clause and will not pay out claims if it has been found to destroy your engine. Hagerty Insurance, a leader in insuring vintage vehicles, was so concerned that they, in conjunction with the Kettering University Advanced Engine Research Laboratory, conducted a study to determine how much danger ethanol really poses to vintage cars.
Preliminary results have recently been reported on Hagerty’s website and they conclude:
"The results from the tests with the SU carburetors and fuel pumps suggest that E10 can be used in older vehicles, although the owner is likely to be faced with the additional costs associated with sealing fuel tanks and cleaning and rebuilding fuel systems more frequently than in the past. However, it’s best to be cautious about reading into these preliminary results until the tests of the five other fuel systems are complete. Until then, it’s safe to assume that you can continue to drive your collector vehicle using E10; it may just cost you more in the long run."

Bristol, the Last True British Made


Bristol Cars has manufactured hand built luxury automobiles in Filton, near Bristol, England since 1947. They have no distributors or dealers; you must call the company direct to order one of the few cars they build each week. They claim to be the last wholly British owned luxury car builder, but their beginnings were found in the bombed out remains of Germany.
It was 1945 and the end of World War II. Bristol Aeroplane Company was looking for new means of revenue, since orders for aircraft engines were drying up, and decided to make automobiles. The company initially developed a prototype sports coupe, but due to the car’s highly dangerous handling problems, it literally destroyed itself during testing on the company’s airfield.
Bristol then decided to manufacture an existing car design. Various accountings of how Bristol got an existing car design are a little fuzzy, so let’s say somehow, they got blueprints for and several examples of late 1930s BMW cars out of Germany and into England. Then the Bristol Aeroplane Company secured the release of a former BMW designer, Fritz Fiedler, from military detention, and the Bristol was born.

Why Do Car Restorations Take So Long?



In our most recent restoration, the 1961 Mark 2 Jaguar, we were astonished to note that we have owned the car now for 17 months and it’s still only 90% complete. So we reflected on why the job is taking so long, and along with the many conversations I have had with friends and enthusiasts, generated the following observations and thoughts about how to short cut this time.
  • Evaluate the project well and plan, plan and plan and include contingencies for low probability but still possible events. When we bought our car, we assembled a lengthy list of what needed to be done, and what we assumed needed to be done. Much of this stood us in good stead for both the negotiation on the purchase price, as well as to acquire the right parts and schedule the restoration in a logical order. So we pat ourselves on the back here.
  • Double or triple the amount of time that your sub-contractors estimate for crucial jobs. We have had 2 examples of this. The first was where the bodyman was so disorganized and eager to accept any and all jobs, that the body work, preparation and painting took 4 months, instead of 4 weeks, and would have taken longer except for my constant vigilance. The second was on the rebuilding of a Borg Warner Automatic Transmission which took 3 months, instead of weeks as originally promised. This took so long because the shop was very busy (they do great work, at a reasonable price!) and they neglected to order / find long delivery time parts early after stripping down the transmission.

Morgan - The Car That Hasn't Changed for 100 Years



Some things never change would be a good way describe Morgan Motor Company. For almost 100 years the Morgan remains a made to order motor car, built on an ash frame to the specifications of the individual owner. The Morgan Motor Company can also claim honors as the worlds oldest privately owned motor car manufacturer. Unless you're a Morgan aficionado, most folks couldn't tell a 1940's Morgan 4/4 from one just off the show room floor. Morgan has retained its distinct styling over the decades and unless you get a look at the engine or the instrument panel, it's hard to tell the old from the new.
On December 26th 1910, Morgan entered the London to Exeter and back Reliability Trial and as a result, won a gold medal and favorable press coverage. This was the first of thousands of awards and races the Morgan was to win. These successes took Morgan's sales to their highest point by the time the World War I broke out in 1914,.
Despite the fact that part of the factory had to be converted to produce shells and other munitions for the war effort, limited production of Morgans were able to continue through out the war. Many three wheeler manufacturers weren't so lucky and closed production for good. There were approximately twenty three manufacturers in 1913 which fell to seven by 1917.
After the war, most auto manufacturers were unable to switch to full production for nearly a year due to the lack of materials. H.F.S.Morgan got his factory back into full production right away using wood and aluminum to build his cars, and had record sales and profits in the two years following.
In 1936 the government announced that it was going to abolish the Road Fund Tax, which did away with the three wheeler's tax advantage. That year Morgan Motor Company introduced their first four wheeled car called the 4/4, for the four cylinders and four wheels. The 4/4 model Morgan is still in production today, looking very similar to the way it looked back then.
But just as Morgan had to change in 1936 to stay alive, they once again accepted change and unveiled the hydrogen-powered LIFECar at the Geneva Motor Show. It still has the traditional Morgan silhouette with a long hood, rounded rear glass and upright tail, but providing the power now is a fuel cell and electric motor system. The concept, according to Morgan, "takes a fresh look at transport, offering as revolutionary an approach to personal freedom as did the brilliant Morgan Three Wheeler introduced by HFS Morgan nearly 100 years ago."

Of the many Italian automakers out there, Fiat has been around for more than a century and is still running strong with 16 cars currently available in their lineup. Fiat came to be back in 1899 and has had many classic and revolutionary cars, but there has been one car that Fiat has made that tops all of them, and that is the Fiat 500 introduced on July 4th, 1957.
The idea of a small, efficient car is a common idea for sure, but when Fiat decided to create their own version of this idea, something magical happened in the process. The new category of the "city car", or a car so very small and made for heavily populated areas, came to be. The Mini Cooper was another example, yes, but that would not happen for another two years, so technically the Fiat 500 was the first small car that maximized interior space.
Its dimensions are 9 feet 9 inches long, 4.3 feet wide and 4.3 feet tall! Its wheelbase is 6 feet and it only weighed 1,100 pounds, which is unprecedented for a car these days in the USA! To give you another example, the newest Honda Accord now weighs in at 3,100 lbs! This may not mean much at first, but when you realize the lighter a car, the more fuel efficient it is, because the less weight is being pushed, thus improving nearly all aspects of the car.

The Traction Avant, French for "front wheel drive", was designed by André Lefèbvre and Flaminio Bertoni in late 1933 / early 1934. While not the first production front wheel drive car – Alvis built the 1928 FWD in the UK, Cord produced the L29 from 1929 to 1932 in the United States and DKW the F1 in 1931 in Germany – it was the world's first front-wheel drive steel monocoque production car. Along with DKWs 1930s models, the Traction successfully pioneered front-wheel drive on the European mass car market.

The Traction Avant's structure was a welded monocoque (unitized body). Most other cars of the era were based on a separate frame (chassis) onto which the non-structural body ("coachwork") was built. Monocoque construction (also called Unit Body or "Unibody" in the US today) results in a lighter vehicle, and is now used for virtually all car construction, although body-on-frame construction remains suitable for larger vehicles such as trucks.
This method of construction was viewed with great suspicion in many quarters, with doubts about its strength. A type of crash test was conceived, taking the form of driving the car off a cliff, to illustrate its great inherent resilience.[2]
The novel design made the car very low-slung relative to its contemporaries – the Traction Avant always possessed a unique look, which went from appearing rakish in 1934 to familiar and somewhat old fashioned by 1955.

Mitsubishi Lancer Second Generation (Part3)

In Europe, the Lancer EX was offered with a turbocharged 2.0 L 4–cylinder engine known as the Lancer EX 2000 Turbo. It was the first Lancer to use the very first 4G63 engine which was then used in succeeding models such as the Galant VR-4 and the Lancer Evolution I to IX.
It achieved a maximum output of 170 PS (125 kW) and manages a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph) and a quarter mile time of less than 15.5 s. A new feature on this model is that it is equipped with ECI or Advanced Electronically-Controlled Fuel Injection which gave the Lancer more power and outstanding fuel economy as it did 23.0 mpg in city driving and 28.8 to 37.2 mpg in highway driving. A rally version of the Lancer EX 2000 Turbo was made for the 1000 Lakes Rally that gave out 280 PS (206 kW; 276 hp). Sales of this model were low because of emission regulations Japan imposed at that time.

Mitsubishi Lancer Second Generation (Part1)

In 1979, the Lancer EX was unveiled in Japan. Only two engines were offered at the time, a 1.4 L MCA-JET equipped engine paired with Mitsubishi's Silent Shaft Technology, which generated 80 hp (60 kW) and a 1.6 L engine that generated 85 hp (63 kW) and 100 hp (75 kW). The MCA-JET system was an entirely new concept when compared with the previously used carburetor system. The MCA stands for Mitsubishi Clean Air which meant that the EX passed both Japan and US emission standards, while the new cylinder head design of the engine gave way for a Jet valve which introduced an extra swirl of air to the combustion chamber, swirling the fuel-air mixture for a cleaner, efficient and more thorough burn.

History of the Ford Small Block V-8

This Windsor, Ontario built 90° V8 was introduced in 1962 as a 221 cubic inch engine. It was Ford's first modern lightweight small-block replacing the old Y-block. In 1963 the small block displacement was bumped up to 260 and 289. The change was increase cylinder bores on early 221's from 3.5" to 3.8" on the 260 and the later standardization to 4" bores on later engines. The 289 was also fitted with larger valves than found in the earlier small blocks. The photo to the left shows a 1966 289-4V sitting smartly in the engine bay of the same year Mustang.

Amphicar

It might have been a novelty, but the Amphicar wasn't as daft an idea as it sounds. The brainchild of German inventor Hans Trippel, who had experience of building successful amphibian vehicles during World War II for the German army, the Amphicar was designed to double up as a car and a boat. It came with two engines -a Triumph Herald unit for road use and a Hermes outboard motor for aquatic use, powering twin propellers. But while brilliant in concept, the Amphicar was a disaster in execution. Its design was too compromised in too many ways, and it was neither brilliant on the road nor in water, and thus unappealing to drive. Poor rust proofing didn't help the car's reputation, either. Owners who forgot to dry their Amphicars off after a swim found them rotting away or - even worse - sinking due to water ingress.

Classic car lovers always get excited when news of a rare, well-kept gem is unearthed in a barn or under a tarp in a back yard. It’s not often you hear of a “lake find”, but this story of a tax-evading 1925 Bugatti Brescia 22 Roadster being retrieved from the bottom of a lake in Switzerland has many people talking. It is up for auction by Bonhams at the Retromobile show on January 23, 2010, with an estimate of over €70,000. But the big question remains…what do you do with a rotten, half-missing lump of nostalgia? Bonhams kindly suggests that it might be more appropriate to preserve the wreck and build a replica.
Over the course of the past few months, one car in particular has become one of the most celebrated of all Bugattis, having lain submerged beneath the waters of Lake Maggiore in Switzerland for more than 70 years. The whereabouts of the sunken Bugatti had been known to the local scuba club for many years but in February 2008 a tragedy occurred that would eventually lead to its retrieval. On the 1st of that month, Damiano Tamagni was attacked by three youths and beaten so severely that he later died from his injuries. Damiano and his father Maurizio were both members of the scuba club in Ascona and it was decided to raise the Bugatti and use the funds from its sale to further the work of a charity set up in Damiano’s name, ‘Fondazione Damiano Tamagi’, which seeks to address the issue of juvenile violence.

But how did the Bugatti come to be in Lake Maggiore in the first place? Subsequent research has uncovered much of its history. On 11th April 1925, chassis number ‘2461′ was registered in Nancy, France in the name of Georges Paiva, with the number ‘8843 N 5′. A small brass plate found on the car after its removal from the lake bears the name ‘Georges Nielly, 48 Rue Nollet, Paris’ but the registration plate is only partly legible, the last digits being ‘RE 1′. This registration was issued in Paris between May and June 1930, which perhaps indicates that Georges Nielly bought the car earlier in 1930 at Nancy and had it registered in Paris in his name. These French registration plates have remained on the Bugatti ever since.

The Bugatti chassis number plate is missing, as is the enamel Bugatti radiator badge. Apart from that, all the relevant numbers are to be found in their usual places. The chassis number ‘2461′ is on the round boss, located on the right front engine bearer (on the side of the exhaust manifold and steering-box) while the engine number ‘879′ is visible on the little round boss, located on top in the middle of the cam box, as well as at the front face of the lower crankcase, next to the water pump.
The gearbox bears the number ‘964′ at the back as well as the usual place on the cover. The rear axle has no number, which is normal for a Bugatti Brescia, but the ratio is stamped on the central casing and reads ‘12 x 45′. The radiator is made by Chausson, as indicated on a plate just above the cranking handle, while the two rear spring carriers still bear the little brass plates with ‘EB, Bugatti, Molsheim (Alsace)’ on them. Contrary to the factory data, which mentions a Solex carburettor, the actual carburettor on the car is a bronze Zenith, correct for this type of Bugatti. The two magnetos (twin ignition) are made by SEV and mounted in the middle of the dashboard as usual for this type of car.

There are indications that the body may have been modified or replaced, the first one being, probably, a simple racing body lacking electrics and mudguards. The valances below the bonnet are in two pieces, where normally they would be in one piece, while the mudguards are slightly flared at the rear, which is unusual for 1925. All this possibly indicates a modified or new body made at the end of the 1920s.
So far, it has not been possible to determine with certainty the identity of the Bugatti’s owner in Ascona. However, the most likely candidate is Marco (Max) Schmuklerski, a Zurich-born architect of Polish descent. He is known to have stayed in Ascona from 17th July 1933 until 25th August 1936 when he left and returned to Zurich. At Ascona he designed, among other buildings, the ‘Casa Bellaria’ an apartment block that has only recently been demolished. If Marco Schmuklerski studied architecture at the famous Beaux Arts school in Paris, it is possible that he bought the Bugatti from Georges Nielly and brought it back to Switzerland, but without paying any import duties. It is also possible that he acquired the car from a French tourist (or client) at Ascona. Whatever the case, the Bugatti has always been driven in Switzerland with its last French plates and import duties have never been paid. Nor has the car ever been registered with Swiss plates.

The story going around Ascona is that Marco Schmuklerski left in 1936, leaving behind the Bugatti, which was stored in the yard of a local building contractor, Barra. Its owner at this time is not known, but the local customs officers knew of the car’s existence and insisted on payment of the import duties owed. At that point these duties may have amounted to more than the value of the Bugatti, which was 11 years old and well used. In the case of non-payment of the duties, the car had to be destroyed and the simplest way to do so was to tip it into the nearby lake. To facilitate its recovery the Bugatti was attached to a heavy chain, but when this finally corroded away the car fell to the lakebed at a depth of 53 metres.

It remained there, undiscovered, until 18th August 1967 when diver Ugo Pillon located the mythical Bugatti, which was lying on its left side, partly buried in the mud. Pillon had been searching for it for some time and after its rediscovery the car became a popular target members of the local sub aqua club. On 12th July 2009, after a 73-year sojourn in Lake Maggiore, the Bugatti was finally rescued from the lake by Jens Boerlin and his comrades from Ascona’s scuba club. Local dignitaries and members of the Bugatti Club Suisse were in attendance, and the Bugatti was transferred by crane onto a trailer for inspection by the sizeable crowd of onlookers. Its long immersion in the lake had resulted in extensive deterioration, ferrous components being badly affected, particularly on the car’s exposed right-hand side. Other materials like wood, aluminium, brass, rubber, etc have survived in much better condition. It would, of course, be possible to restore the car, but it has been estimated that only some 20% of the original is reusable. Alternatively, a faithful replica could be created, using ‘2461′ as a pattern, for approximately the same cost as a full restoration. Arguably, it would be more appropriate to preserve the Brescia in its current state for static display, but that is for the fortunate new owner to decide.

Lorraine Dietric 1908 Touring menjadi salah satu mobil yang paling ramai dikunjungi pengunjung pada 3rd Int'l Classic Car Show 2009, Balai Kartini, Jakarta.

Mobil keluaran Prancis tahun 1908 ini merupakan kendaraan terbuka dengan kapasitas penumpang empat hingga lima orang. Lorraine memiliki mesin kembar yang masih amat sederhana.

Tiga jenis lampu menghiasi bagian depan, yakni lampu besar, kecil, dan lampu kabut. Selain itu, mobil memiliki tiga transmisi kecepatan.

Yang cukup jarang pada zamannya adalah kaca bening di bagian depan mobil. Ukuran ban mencapai 33 inci dengan as roda yang terbuat dari kayu. Sedangkan, body mobil terbuat dari kayu dan besi.

Saat dijual, kendaraan itu saat dilepas pada harga 980 poundsterling. Itulah sebabnya, Lorraine menjadi salah satu maskot pameran mobil klasik tahun ini.
